Music SA is so excited to see Umbrella 2020 bring another year of vibrant and diverse live music to warm South Australia’s winter months. In a historic move,  Umbrella will be expanding regionally across South Australia in 2020 thanks to a grant of $200,000 from the Marshall Government.

The grant builds on the city-based funding the festival receives from the Music Development Office and the SA Tourism Commission’s Live Music Events Fund and the City of Adelaide.  Last year’s event saw over 380 events across over 111 venues, with 1300 musicians taking part and performing across 20 contemporary music genres.

Music SA will be assisting regional communities in curating unique Umbrella celebrations to showcase a wonderful array of local musicians as a part of this regional activation. The festival will also be extended for an extra week, kicking off on July 17th and wrapping up on August 9th, with registrations opening on February 24 via the Umbrella AVR site: https://avr.umbrellafestival.com.au

Registrations for only $25 per event will be supported by a major marketing and promotional campaign to be run by Music SA across TV, cinema, print, radio and online.

Minister for Innovation and Skiills David Pisoni said, “Expanding Umbrella will help increase regional engagement, activity and live music performance opportunities, and support the growth of the creative industries in South Australia.”

Music SA will also be launching the first ever Live Music Toolkit, a practical resource to assist local and regional councils in activating more live music, which can be found here.

CEO of Music SA Lisa Bishop says “Live music is a tourism drawcard, provides economic benefits to local businesses, helps with the wellbeing and career aspirations of young people and has also been shown to connect Australians from diverse backgrounds living in multicultural communities,”

Now it is easy to learn how you can be a part of the ever-growing open access Umbrella community in 2020. Music SA will be holding a series of information sessions for interested musicians, venue managers, promoters, council staff, event managers and anyone else interested. The sessions include:

  • Adelaide CBD – St Paul’s Creative Centre (200 Pulteney Street, Adelaide 5000) on Wednesday 26 Feb (10:30am and 5:30pm)
  • Port Adelaide – Pirate Life Brewing (18 Baker Street, Port Adelaide 5015 ) on Tuesday 25 Feb (10:30am)
